PMDD is not PMS: Finally understand the difference between PMS AND PMDD

PMDD is not PMS PMDD

PMDD is NOT PMS – AND Why Saying “It’s Just Bad PMS” Can Be Dangerous

“It’s just bad PMS,” they said, trying to be helpful. I smiled politely, but inside I felt that familiar ache of being misunderstood. Like many others with PMDD symptoms, I’ve heard this well-meaning but oversimplified comparison countless times. While the intention might be to relate and comfort, this common misconception can actually prevent people from seeking the help they desperately need. PMS is not PMDD.

The Problem with “Just Bad PMS”

When I finally received my PMDD diagnosis, it was like finding a missing puzzle piece. All those years of being told I was just experiencing severe PMS had led to delayed treatment and unnecessary suffering. This widespread misunderstanding isn’t just frustrating – it’s dangerous. Research shows that 72% of people with diagnosed PMDD report having experienced suicidal thoughts.1 This isn’t “just PMS” – it’s a serious health condition that requires proper understanding and treatment. If you are still unsure of what PMDD is, we dive into it here.

Understanding the Key Differences

Let’s break down the four crucial differences between PMS and PMDD:

1. The Underlying Cause

PMS: Can be caused by various hormonal imbalances and often responds well to simple lifestyle changes.2

PMDD: Results from an abnormal brain response to normal hormone fluctuations, particularly estrogen and progesterone3,4 and has been found to have a genetic link.5

2. Duration

PMS: Typically lasts 3-5 days during the second week of the luteal phase.

PMDD: Can last 2+ weeks, starting from ovulation, with three distinct subtypes of symptom presentation.6

3. Severity

PMS: Generally causes mild to moderate discomfort without significantly impacting daily life

PMDD: Often debilitating, significantly impacting quality of life, work performance, and relationships.7

4. Prevalence

PMS: Affects about 90% of menstruating individuals to some degree.8

PMDD: Impacts approximately 3-8% of menstruating individuals.9

Why Saying “It’s Just Bad PMS” Can Be Dangerous

Understanding these differences isn’t just about academic knowledge – it’s about saving lives. Consider these sobering statistics10:

– 49% of people with diagnosed PMDD have planned for suicide

– 34% have attempted suicide, compared to 3% in the general population

So you’re suddenly engulfed in a wave of anger before your period?

That fury is your body’s desperate whisper turned scream: “Please, finally, choose ME.” 🔥

For years, I’d transform into someone I barely recognized—clenched fists, harsh words perched on my tongue, ready to lash out at the slightest provocation.

I blamed my hormones, PMDD, my broken chemistry... never considering this rage had roots in something simpler yet profound.

There’s a beautiful truth hiding in plain sight:

PMS might actually stand for “Prioritize My SELF” (thank you, Alisa Vitti).

When that premenstrual rage surfaces, it’s often because:
• Your body has endured weeks, maybe months, of putting everyone else first
• Your blood sugar has been riding rollercoasters from skipped meals & coffee-as-food
• Your sleep has been sacrificed at the altar of overthinking & midnight doom scrolling
• Your exposure to environmental toxins has overwhelmed your already taxed system
• Your joy & pleasure have been indefinitely postponed for “someday”

When estrogen steps back and progesterone rises during your luteal phase, your feel-good brain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) naturally dip.

Suddenly, the mask slips—you can no longer pretend that constant people-pleasing and multitasking isn’t depleting you to the core.

Your rage isn’t something to suppress or shame.

It’s a messenger carrying wisdom: boundaries need reinforcing, needs require voicing, & self-care isn’t selfish—it’s survival.

Try this gentle redirection:
• Notice when anger surfaces and pause before reacting
• Ask yourself: “What need of mine has been ignored?”
• Schedule non-negotiable daily moments that belong only to you
• Simplify your responsibilities during luteal phase
• Honor your body’s unique rhythms rather than fighting them

That premenstrual anger can become your compass, guiding you back to yourself when you’ve wandered too far into caring for everyone but you.

Drop COMMUNITY below to join women who are transforming their relationship with PMDD—channeling that premenstrual rage into action instead of self-destruction.

I used to think healing from PMDD required dramatic solutions to match its intense chaos.

The life-changing truth I discovered after living for 17 years misdiagnosed and undiagnosed and now 7 years in practice helping others learn to reduce and manage their symptoms?

✨Small changes make the big difference✨

It’s not about overhauling your entire life, but those daily micro-movements toward healing:
* That glass of water before crashing
* A 10-minute sunlight walk amid spiraling
* Choosing protein when your body craves stability
* Pausing to ask what’s beneath the anger
* Prioritizing rest over productivity

Just like $5/day becomes thousands over time, these compassionate choices compound.

PMDD might feel like your whole story now—but it’s just a chapter, and you’re writing what comes next.

* A 10-minute sunlight walk amid spiraling
* Choosing protein when your body craves stability
* Pausing to ask what’s beneath the anger
* Prioritizing rest over productivity

Just like $5/day becomes thousands over time, these compassionate choices compound.

PMDD might feel like your whole story now—but it’s just a chapter, and you’re writing what comes next.

When you know it’s almost that time and you start emotionally ducking for cover like you’re in an action movie finale..

Yep.. I’ve been there too—bracing for the mood swings, tiptoeing around your own brain, and wondering who you’ll become this time, what you’ll single handedly destroy..

One minute you’re fine, the next you’re deep in existential dread because one seemingly small thing that wouldn’t usually bother you completely SET YOU OFF.

The fear is real.

The unpredictability?

Even MORE real.

But you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through every cycle.

You can learn how to work with your body instead of fighting against it.

We talk about all of this inside our PMDD Support Community—from weekly support calls to tools for symptom management we’ll help you go from taking cover to taking the reins of your life back.

The night sweats struggle is real.

When your body’s thermostat goes haywire during PMS and PMDD, it’s not just about inconvenience—it’s about disrupted sleep, hormone imbalance, and daily functioning.

Understanding the science behind night sweats is the first step to finding relief.

Whether it’s hormonal fluctuations throwing off your thermal neutral zone, blood sugar imbalances triggering stress hormones, or your body’s detoxification pathways struggling to process excess estrogen—knowledge is power.

I have good news though!

Small, consistent changes make a significant difference.

Staying hydrated, balancing blood sugar with protein-rich snacks, reducing stress, and tracking your symptoms can transform your experience.

* A 10-minute sunlight walk amid spiraling
* Choosing protein when your body craves stability
* Pausing to ask what’s beneath the anger
* Prioritizing rest over productivity

Just like $5/day becomes thousands over time, these compassionate choices compound.

PMDD might feel like your whole story now—but it’s just a chapter, and you’re writing what comes next.

* Prioritizing rest over productivity

Just like $5/day becomes thousands over time, these compassionate choices compound.

PMDD might feel like your whole story now—but it’s just a chapter, and you’re writing what comes next.

* A 10-minute sunlight walk amid spiraling
* Choosing protein when your body craves stability
* Pausing to ask what’s beneath the anger
* Prioritizing rest over productivity

Just like $5/day becomes thousands over time, these compassionate choices compound.

TRAVEL IS A TRIGGER

This is true for my own PMDD experience but also for EVERY single one of my clients & students.

Let’s talk about why.

Travel disrupts the 7 Core Areas of Hormone Health: Nutrition, Resilience, Movement, Sleep, Relationships, Environment, Spirituality.

When these 7 Core Areas are f*cked with, your symptoms worsen.

Travel throws off routines. Travel can be very stressful. Travel dysregulates blood sugar balance. Travel results in sleep disruptions. YOU KNOW THE DRILL.

I’m going to be honest, I wrecked every family vacation or trip I took with friends that was planned during the luteal (premenstrual) phase of my menstrual cycle until I was 29.

This was so embarrassing & happened repeatedly.

I would be sitting on sandy beaches in the Cayman Islands or on a ski mountain in British Columbia, miserable.

Then there was the shame for how “entitled I was”to be acting like this. Then the guilt for how incapable I was at “putting on a happy face” & instead letting my misery seep over into everyone else’s vacation experience.

This didn’t just happen once. It happened OVER & OVER again.

I would lock myself in the hotel room & cry for hours, hell days sometimes. I would lash out at my family or partners. I would take off in an attempt to isolate but in a new city by myself & scare my family & friends.

My poor family was traumatized & tried to cope by running an endearing joke about how I will ruin our vacation this time.

Learning to stick to my PMDD protocol with an 80/20 rule has transformed my travel experience.

I try to plan trips during my pre-ovulatory phases but when that is not possible I hold close to the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time I am on protocol & 20% of the time I am making choices, I know, will negatively impact my symptom presentation.

The result: everyone enjoys the trip, even me.

Mapping your symptom patter is the first step in learning to reduce and manage your symptoms.

Ever dressed professionally just to be taken seriously at the doctor’s office?

raises hand 👋

There I was, smoothing down my blazer in the waiting room, rehearsing my symptoms for the 100th time, hoping THIS appointment would be different.

For 17 years, I walked this medical maze, searching for answers to my PMDD suffering.

The journey was exhausting:
• Countless appointments with doctors who didn’t understand
• 5 different birth controls that made everything worse
• Antidepressants and antipsychotics that left me feeling like a shell
• Family relationships strained by medication side effects + my PMDD symptoms
• Being offered the same solutions despite their repeated failures

What I didn’t realize?

I was visiting cake shops looking for donuts. 🍰≠🍩

PMDD exists at the intersection of endocrinology and mental health—and there is no field of medicine there.

We fall through the cracks because there’s no specialty designed just for us.

Even those finding some relief through medication often discover it’s not enough.

The majority of my PMDD Rehab students are on medications AND still searching for more comprehensive symptom management.

There is another way forward.

For seven years, we’ve been carefully constructing a path at Her Mood Mentor—one that sees you, hears you, and understands that your healing deserves more than a prescription pad approach.

You don’t have to keep dressing up your pain just to be acknowledged.

Your experience is valid in sweatpants or pant suits.
