WHAT IS FAM?

Fertility Awareness Based Methods teach body literacy. FAM, FAB methods, or “natural family planning” are all names for methods of tracking biological fertility markers to monitor cycle health, prevent pregnancy, or achieve conception. There are a variety of Fertility Awareness Based Methods which either singularly track the different biomarkers or use a combination of fertility signs in the practice.

methods that fall under the category of Fertility Awareness Methods

  • Calendar Method and variations such as the Standard Days Method
  • Cervical Mucus Method
  • Basal Body Temperature Method
  • Symptothermal Method
  • Digital apps such as Natural Cycles that use the calendar method and something additional such as basal body temperature (Please note: most period tracking apps aren’t appropriate for pregnancy prevention)
  • Fertility Monitors, OPK Tests

When trained by an instructor to fully understand and properly track sympto-thermal changes that indicate fertility ,a menstruator can expect to avoid conception at a 99.6% success rate. FAM is an affordable and accessible, natural form of contraception that has none of the pesky and risky side effects that come with hormonal birth control. In 1980 a study by the WHO determined that 95% of women are capable of learning the sympto-thermal method.

On the other side of the spectrum, receiving FAM education in fertility biomarkers and tracking can drastically improve conception rates for couples trying to conceive (TTC.) Learning how to identify ovulation biomarkers will help you recognize your fertile window and more accurately time conception.
